Following the Euronews documentary, Marine Microalgae: A Sustainable Alternative for Ocean Preservation, many questions have been raised about these tiny single-celled organisms that can convert sunlight, nutrients and CO2 into valuable biomolecules.
As quoted by Joaquín Pozo Dengra, R&D director, Biorizon Biotech and project coordinator ALGAENAUTS, In this documentary ‘We have to take into account that by 2030 we must eliminate chemical compounds in agriculture to achieve a sustainable and healthy food production’, la vía de las microalgaswhich is why research into microalgae, as well as being decisive to this end, is yielding effective results.
Microalgae, as Euronews reports in its programme and explains Gabriel Acién, SABANA project coordinator, Professor of Chemical Engineering, University of Applied Sciences Universidad de Almería, not only possess properties biostimulants for food production in agriculture, in addition, they provide biopesticides for the control of plant pests and diseases, such as insects, nematodes, fungi and bacteria without having to resort to the use of chemical products, simply with these natural molecules that are obtained from the microalgae.
Euronews poses the question: Can these tiny marine organisms help us solve some of the biggest challenges facing our planet?
In Almeria we can answer this question thanks to the research work that has been carried out for years with Almerian talent in our land and whose challenge according to the SDGs is to halve the use of chemical pesticides by the end of this decade. Will we make it?
